Originally based in Sioux City, IA, Gateway was founded in 1985, and attracted attention primarily for its innovative advertising. Gateway expanded on the Dell model of offering made-to-order computers both online and in through hundreds of "Gateway Country" stores, mostly in suburban small-town U.S. towns. In 2007, it was acquired by Acer and continues to manufacture models under the Gateway name, but no longer sell them made-to-order as they once did.
